Working Memory vs Attention: Why “Not Listening” Looks the Same

There’s a particular kind of school email that can ruin your nervous system before you’ve even finished the second sentence.

You know the one. A score was low. A concern has been noted. Something about attention, or effort, or following directions. Maybe there’s a chart. Maybe there’s educational jargon trying very hard to sound objective while your stomach is already halfway to your ankles. And then somehow the message ends with a cheerful little, “Hope this helps.”

Helpful how, exactly?

Helpful like a smoke alarm with no exit plan? Helpful like “your tire is flat, good luck”?

This is one of the reasons parents spiral so fast around test scores, teacher comments, and school concerns. Not because they’re overreacting. Not because they’re “too emotional.” But because when you care deeply about your child, it is almost impossible not to hear concern as prophecy.

So let’s start there: a score is not a prophecy.

“This is a snapshot. Not a life sentence.”

It’s not your child. It’s not their future. It’s not the whole story.

It’s one piece of information about one facet of a very real, very complicated human being who lives in an actual body, in an actual classroom, in an actual family, with actual strengths, actual stress, actual quirks, and actual limits.

That matters.

Because when a child seems like they’re “not listening,” “not paying attention,” or “forgetting everything,” two different brain demands can be at play: attention and working memory. In real life, they can look so similar that parents, teachers, and sometimes even professionals end up mashing them together into one big vague concern.

But they’re not the same thing.

And once you understand the difference, you can stop moralizing what you’re seeing and start supporting it.

When “not listening” isn’t actually one thing

A lot of parenting stress lives in the interpretation.

Your child doesn’t do the three things you asked them to do, and your brain has to explain that somehow. So it fills in the blanks fast. They weren’t listening. They don’t care. They’re distracted again. They’re being oppositional. They’re old enough to know better. Why is this still so hard?

That interpretation gap is where a lot of heat gets generated.

Because from the outside, a child who misses a direction and a child who forgets a direction can look exactly the same. Both might still be standing in the kitchen three minutes later with one sock on and no backpack. Both might say, “Wait, what?” Both might make you feel like you are starring in a one-woman show called Please Put Your Shoes On.

But those are not identical brain problems.

One child may not have fully taken the information in. Another may have taken it in just fine, but couldn’t hold onto it long enough to do anything with it.

That difference matters because support that helps one won’t necessarily help the other.

And this is where it helps to shift from character language to brain language. Not because behavior doesn’t matter. It does. Kids still need structure, follow-through, and limits. But when we jump straight to “won’t” without getting curious about “can’t,” we usually get more conflict and worse information.

Sometimes a child is resisting. Sometimes a child is overloaded. Sometimes it’s both. And sometimes what looks like defiance is just a brain that lost the thread.

The flashlight and the sticky note

Here’s the simplest way to think about it.

Attention is the flashlight.

Working memory is the sticky note.

Attention is what helps your child notice the right thing, tune in, stay with it, and not get pulled in twelve different directions by the dog, the sibling, the hum of the fridge, the pencil rolling off the table, and their own extremely interesting internal thoughts.

Working memory is what helps them hold information in mind long enough to use it.

So attention says, Oh, this matters. Pay attention to this.

Working memory says, Got it. I’ll keep hold of that while we do the thing.

That’s why the two overlap so much. If the flashlight never lands on the information in the first place, the sticky note stays blank. And if the flashlight does its job but the sticky note falls off two seconds later, the child still looks like they “weren’t listening.”

From the outside, both can sound like this:

“I already told you.”

“Why are you just standing there?”

“How did you forget again?”

“Are you even listening to me?”

This is why parents feel confused sometimes. They’re trying to solve a problem they haven’t been given clean language for.

So let’s make it cleaner.

If your child struggles more with attention, the issue is usually at the front end. The information doesn’t consistently get in. They’re on another channel. They miss the first half of the instruction. They get pulled away by competing input. They start, stop, wander, interrupt, shift, drift, or look physically present while mentally elsewhere.

If your child struggles more with working memory, the issue is often what happens after the information gets in. They heard you. They even meant to do it. But by the time they got upstairs, saw one random stuffed animal, and remembered they were thirsty, the original plan was gone. Not because they were trying to be difficult. Because the mental sticky note fell off.

That’s why working memory issues often show up as kids doing one part of a direction but not the rest. Or coming back for the second, third, and fourth reminder even when they’re not being remotely snarky about it. Or losing the thread in the middle of a task they genuinely intended to complete.

It’s also why parents can end up narrating life in the most exhausting possible way.

Shoes. Now backpack. No, backpack. Now water bottle. Why are we in the bathroom? No, not a cartwheel. Buddy. The bus.

If that feels familiar, you are not alone. And no, it does not automatically mean your child is lazy, manipulative, or choosing chaos for sport.

Sometimes the demand is just bigger than the skill in that moment.

Why the same kid can look so different at home and school

This is where things get especially messy.

A child can look “fine” in one setting and really struggle in another. A kid can score average on something and still be falling apart during homework. A teacher can say, “I don’t really see much of that,” while you are looking around your own house like, interesting, because I appear to be raising a tiny exhausted raccoon.

Both things can be true.

That’s not because anyone is lying. It’s because context changes the demand.

Testing environments are often structured, quiet, one-to-one, novel, and full of clear adult attention. A lot of kids do better there than they do in the wild. The task is contained. The feedback is immediate. The environment is cleaner. The expectations are clearer.

A classroom is not that.

A household at 4:12 p.m. is definitely not that.

Real life includes transitions, background noise, waiting, sensory input, hunger, social demands, fatigue, competing tasks, emotional wear and tear, and all the invisible executive function jobs that make childhood more taxing than adults sometimes realize.

That’s why “same kid, different demands” is one of the most useful lenses parents can borrow. The kid who can do math correctly with you at the kitchen table may still fall apart in a classroom if the room is noisy, the directions were multi-step, the task felt vague, their attention got split, or their working memory got overloaded halfway through.

The kid who looks regulated at school may come home and completely unravel because they’ve been white-knuckling it all day and their system is done. So when a school report or classroom observation doesn’t perfectly match what you see at home, the answer is not automatically, “Someone is wrong.”

The better question is, “What changed about the demands?”

That question gets you much closer to something useful.

The real question is not “What’s wrong with them?”

It’s, “What is this child being asked to do, and what support does their brain need to do it?”

That is such a different posture.

It moves you away from blame and toward curiosity. Away from labels used like verdicts and toward patterns used like information.

And that matters, because plenty of families get stuck trying to solve attention problems with lectures, or working-memory problems with consequences, or all-purpose overwhelm with more verbal instruction. Which is a little like trying to fix a bad Wi-Fi signal by yelling the password louder.

If the issue is that the brain is losing the thread, more words won’t solve it.

If the issue is that the brain never fully tuned in to begin with, repeating the same long instruction from the other room is not exactly a winning strategy either.

Support has to match the bottleneck.

Once parents start seeing the difference, they usually stop taking every lapse so personally. They get less hooked by the idea that their child “should” be able to do this if they really cared. They start noticing when the task is too long, the language is too dense, the timing is bad, the steps are invisible, or the environment is doing absolutely no one any favors.

That shift alone can lower a lot of heat.

“We don’t support a score. We support a child.”

What actually helps in real life

This is the part parents always want, understandably. Tell me what to do on a Tuesday when we are already late and everyone is one missing shoe away from losing it.

Fair.

If working memory is the bigger issue, the goal is to stop making your child’s brain hold everything internally. Put the plan somewhere it can be seen. Not because they’ll need a checklist forever, but because scaffolding is how brains build skills.

A three-step visual can do more work than a five-minute speech. Shoes. Lunch. Out the door. Pajamas. Teeth. Book. It is not glamorous. It is not Pinterest content. It is effective.

The other sneaky-helpful move is to cut the language load. Parents often think they’re giving one instruction when they’re actually giving a small TED Talk. A child with shaky working memory usually does better when the direction is shorter, clearer, and smaller. One step. Then check. Then the next step.

One of my favorite phrases here is: “Tell me what you’re going to do first.”

That line does a lot. It lets you see whether the message actually got in. It strengthens encoding because they have to say it out loud. And it shifts the interaction from accusation to coaching. You’re not quizzing them because they failed. You’re helping the plan stick.

If attention is a bigger piece of the puzzle, the work is often about helping the brain start and helping it stay with the task long enough to gain traction.

That’s why a five-minute start sprint can be weirdly effective. Not finish the whole worksheet. Not clean the entire room. Just start for five minutes. A lot of kids get hung up at the starting line, and a task that feels impossible at “do all of it” feels much more doable at “do five minutes.”

Movement before a demand can also change the whole tone of a moment. Not as a reward. As regulation. A minute of wall push-ups, jumping jacks, a lap down the hallway, carrying something heavy, animal walks across the living room floor. Sometimes the body has to wake up before the brain can cooperate.

And then there’s First/Then language, which is blessedly simple and rarely needs a big explanation. First math page, then snack. First shoes, then show. First the boring thing, then the better thing. You are not bribing. You are structuring.

Usually, though, the kids we’re talking about here need a little support for both attention and working memory. They need the visual and the shorter direction. The movement and the timer. The First/Then and the check-in. The environment matters too. Homework next to a TV, a sibling, an iPad, and a snack buffet is not exactly setting anyone up for focused success.

This is why the best strategies often look almost offensively ordinary. A routine. A timer. A visual. A shorter instruction. A predictable sequence. A place where the backpack goes every single day.

Not fancy.

Helpful.

What to say at home when you don’t want to sound like a drill sergeant

A lot of this comes down to language.

Not because the perfect script fixes everything. It doesn’t. But because certain kinds of language lower shame and increase clarity.

Instead of “How many times do I have to tell you?” try “Tell me what you’re doing first.”

Instead of “You need to finish all of this now,” try “You don’t have to finish it all. You do have to start. Five minutes, then a quick break.”

Instead of “Stop bouncing around and focus,” try “Let’s wake your brain up first, then we’ll start.”

Instead of “Why is this so hard every single day?” try “This routine is asking a lot of your brain right now. Let’s make it easier to see.”

That’s a very different energy.

Still firm. Still clear. Still adult in charge.

But it doesn’t pile shame on top of struggle.

And for strong-willed kids especially, that matters. They tend to do badly with lectures, power struggles, and anything that smells like humiliation. Clearer structure plus less moral heat is usually a much better combo.

What to say to school without writing a dissertation

This topic also tends to show up in school conversations where parents know something is off, but don’t want to sound reactive, defensive, or like they’re winging it in front of a table full of educators.

You do not need to show up with a novel.

You do need patterns, examples, and a specific ask.

Something like this works beautifully: “We’re noticing a pattern where multi-step directions and independent work are hard to complete without extra support. At home, visual checklists, chunking tasks, and short movement breaks seem to help. I’d love to talk about the attention and working-memory demands in the classroom and whether a simple support plan could help, like shorter step-by-step directions, chunked work, visuals, and quick check-ins. Can we also decide what we’ll use to measure progress and when we’ll review it?”

That kind of language is grounded, collaborative, and clear. It tells the school you are not just bringing anxiety to the table. You are bringing observations.

Pick one moment where things tend to fall apart and change the support before you change the expectation.

One small shift is enough to learn something.

That’s the real point. Not performing perfect parenting. Getting better information.

Because when you change the support and the behavior changes too, that tells you something important about what your child’s brain needed.

It means we stop confusing support with indulgence.

It means we remember that a child is more than a score, more than a teacher comment, and more than the most frustrating ten minutes of the morning routine.

A child is the whole diamond.
